Left could sever ties with UPA: Basu

Amid a fresh rift over the Indo-US nuclear deal, veteran CPI (M) leader Jyoti Basu hinted that the Left could soon sever its ties with the UPA, which he said, is an ''arrangement'' to keep the BJP at bay.

''They are dependent on us, we are dependent on them, to keep the BJP away. I do not know how long this arrangement would continue,'' he said at a meeting at Salt Lake near Kolkata.

The veteran Marxist said the majority opinion in Parliament was against the deal and the UPA government at the Centre has been asked not to proceed to operationalise it.

''We have told them not to proceed in operationalising the deal. How can they say the Hyde Act is not binding on India,'' Basu said.
