Since a long time now, the opposition had been targeting the minority community and specifically the madrasas as popular poll strategy. They are purposefully trying to portray a biased picture of the left front government knowing well enough that the secular image of the left are their biggest threat. They seem to have forgotten that it is the left front government who had first tried to introduce main stream subjects into the madrasas as mathematics and English. In 2000 there were 6881 teachers in madrasas whose salaries and emoluments including retirement benefits were entirely taken care of by the state Left Front Government. The state government had spent Rs.319 crore for updating over 229 high madrasas, 175 junior madrasas & 103 senior madrasas in the state. It is noteworthy that Bengal under the Left Front government is the only state where Madrassa teachers and employees are paid salaries and retirement benefits as per norms applicable for all other government-run schools. And only in Bengal does one find an autonomous Madrassa Education Council. The numbers of examinees in various Madrassa examinations, too, have increased emphatically. For 1977, the figures for High Madrassa and Alim stood at 3,433 and 567 respectively. For 2001, the figures were 16,176 and 1,938. Additionally, 267 examinees sat for the D’amil examination of 2001.
However, the opposition feels that the Sachar Committee report had been an eye opener for the left front government. However they fail to recognize that Sachar Committee Report was prepared for the entire country and not only on West Bengal. The report is also based on secondary information available in 2001 Census. What they are not aware of or have conveniently forgotten is that due to land reform measures in this state around 17% Muslims were benefited reported the state’s minister for higher education Mr. Sudarshan Roychowdhury at Swarupnagar on Friday. He was speaking at a meeting organized by the leftist teacher’s organization & campaigning for the left front candidate from Bonga, Asim Bala. He brought forth the biasedness in the Sachar Committee report which nowhere mentioned the considerable number of minority community candidates who works in various primary & secondary schools as teachers & in police, panchayats & municipalities. He also beautifully portrayed the devastating nature of the policies of the NDA & UPA which led to the suicide of numerous numbers of peasants and poor people.
He also stressed that there is no alternative but to move towards industry based on agriculture.
