Poetry festival on Communual harmony

In response to the call given by the Left Front , people in West Bengal observed through meetings, seminars, processions, Sunday December 6 as the Day of Communal Harmony. In Calcutta besides a central meeting, addressed among others, by the Left Front Chairman, Sailen Dasgupta, the other highlights were inauguration of Vidyasagar long Mela- a forthnight-long literacy campaign and a three-day festival of poems. Poets, aged and not so aged and of the new genre recited their poems championing the cause of secularism. The day was observed in the districts with equal vigour. The Mela was inaugurated by the State's Governor, Mr. A.R. Kidwai.

On this day six years ago, December 6,1992,the BJP, RSS and other outfits of the saffron brigade-through perfidy---demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya creating a communal divide in the country .In the fallout of the demolition, thousands of innocent men and women were killed. Of late the members of the Christian community have been the target of terror unleashed by the BJP and the RSS which have made no bones about the replacement of the diversity of the Indian culture by their aggressive Hindutva stance.

At the Front’s meeting in the city, leaders exhorted people to maintain a constant vigil against the BJP or saffron sympathiser's ‘ move to disturb peace in their localities and breach of the prevailing harmony among and the Hindus and the Muslims in the State. They said that the BJP would pursue their hidden agenda of Hindutva breaking the secular fabric of the Indian society. The people will have to be on guard always foiling the nefarious designs of the BJP and its cohorts.

commun1.jpg (5276 bytes)Inaugurating the festival of poems in the city, poet Annada Shankar Ray said it was significant that the day-----December 6 had been chosen for inauguration of the festival. Let the poets, litterateurs through their pens create something new that would raise its voice against death and destruction. Poets, he hoped could play an important role for preserving the integrity of the country amid diversity. Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharya, State’s Information and Cultural Affairs Ministers, said the blackened chapter of Indian history that marked the demolition of the Babri Masjid has hit the people’s conscience and their sense of values. The same issue was far above the realms of politics. Those who destroy, do not say that the last word people with secular outlook would have the last laugh, Bhattacharya said.Poet Samsur Rahaman recited his own poem that waged a war against communalism. Samsur Rahaman is a poet from Bangladesh. Manab Mukherjee, Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, announced that the festival of poems would henceforth be organised regularly.

sampriti.jpg (23477 bytes)Not falling in line with the BJP, Trinamul Congress, a constiment of the BJP-led combine at the centre, observed against the demolition of the Babri Masjid. At a meeting in the city Ms Mamata Banerjee, Trinamul leader demanded of the Prime Minister that those involved in the demolition of the Babri Masjid be fried and punished appropriately. Mr. Ajit Panja Trinamul MP, warned Prime Minister that the Party's hawks be kept under lash.
