| EDITORIAL RE-WEARING THE MASK As the BJP-led Govt. in the Centre, despite its serious drubbing in the recent State election, conspires further to remain in power, the nation prepares itself to give another jolt to the Govt. on 11th December, 98 through a nationwide General Strike. The Strike call given by 56 mass organisations have evoked tremendous response across the length and breadth of the country. Failure of the Govt. on all fronts coupled with vulgar display of communal politics by Sangh Parivar has brought the credibility of the Govt. to its nadir. An unprecedented rise in prices of all essential commodities, closure of industries, privatisation of public sector through disinvestment, industrial recession and now the latest effort of the Govt. to bring in legislation to open up insurance sector to private capital as well as to amend the existing Patent Laws as per the directions of WTO have created an explosive situation, which can no longer be kept at bay by the so-called stable and able Govt. Unnerved by the mass resentment, as reflected in the elections as well as the tremendous response to the strike call, the saffron brigade is now trying its old game of wearing the Swadeshi mask to befool the people. RSS and Swadeshi Jagaran Manch all of a sudden appeared to have woken up and are shedding crocodile tears on the issue of opening of insurance sector to foreign capital. As per reports, Murali Monohar Joshi, Uma Bharati, members of Vajpayee cabinet along with K R Malkani, Gurumurthy etc are now publicly expressing their opposition to the entry of foreign capital in insurance sector and against the amendment of Patents Act. What were the cabinet members doing when the cabinet approved 40% foreign equity in insurance? Where was Swadeshi Jagaran Manch when Govt. decided to include 340 items in the OGL list (including mudi sindur, bindi etc.), to close 8 public sector units, 64 coal mines and disinvest 74% of Govt. equity in profit making public sector which will lead to more import of items produced in these units as well as result in MNC's control in vital sectors like oil, power, steel, coal, fertiliser etc.? Their present stance of allowing private capital from the national corporate only is only a guise to allow privatisation for the present in a swadeshi mask. It is a diversionary tactics to mislead the people from the basic issues and they would remove this mask as and when it suits them to allow foreign capital through back door. The hullabaloo created through the captive press and media is meant for diluting the people's wrath against the present Govt., which would be reflected on 11th December through the General Strike. Mask or no mask, the anti people policies and actions of BJP-led Govt. and the Sangh Parivar stand expose 7 th December, 1998. |
