Even as almost the entire nation stood as one man condemning the BJP and the Sangh Parivar for the demolition of the Babri Masjid six years ago, BJP leaders apparently unable to counter the growing wrath of the people, particularly of the minorities have started expressing regret for the episode. The durbbing the BJP has received at the hands of the electorate in the last month’s Assembly elections in Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh has forced some of the BJP leaders, in a mood for atonement, to express regret for the crime. But even after the belated admission of guilt, the same BJP leaders have made no mention of thousands of men women children killed in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demoliition. Both Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee and the Union Home Minister, Mr L.K.Advani have expressed regret. A point to note is that besides Mr. Kalyan Singh, the then U.P. Chief Minister having been sent to jail by the Supreme Court for a day, Mr. Advani has also been chargesheeted for the crime but Mr. Advani has refused to resign from the Union Cabinet although on similar grounds another Union Minister of the AIDMK has already resigned from the cabinet. None of the BJP, RSS,VHP leaders has come out with a statement that clandestine preparation for construction of the temple at the Babri Masjid site and elswhere has been abandoned. Obviously the expression of regret for the Babri Masjid demolition by the BJP leaders , made under duress, will have to be taken on its face value.

It is too late for the BJP leaders to regret or ask for forgiveness for the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6 six years ago. These are the same people who had committed this heinous crime, the CPI(M) leader and Left Front Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu said in Calcutta on Monday. Basu made the observation when reporters pointed out that the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee had expressed regret for the Babri Masjid demolition just on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the crime.

Basu said there were proofs suggesting that the BJP had demolished the Masjid adding that on a directive from the Supreme Court, Kalyan Singh, U.P. Chief Minister was sent to prison for a day then. Now the same BJP was ruling at the Centre. Earlier on Sunday, Basu said that the then U.P. Chief Minister, Kalyan Singh had himself planned the demolition of the Babri Masjid. A video version of the vandalism was with the Left Front. Stating that Kalyan Singh was not truthful saying that the demolition of the mosque was sudden and unplanned, Basu reminded him that it was Kalyan Singh who after the destruction of the Babri Masjid had admitted in Calcutta that the demolition was done in record time; otherwise, if the task was assigned to the contractors, they would have taken a month and a half.
