Initiatives in Bengal

by Special Correspondent

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries feels that West Bengal offers the highest potential for industrial growth in the country with its improved law and order situation, developed infrastructure, unhindered supply of power and a reserve of skilled technicians. West Bengal now tops the list of States in the country for investment in industries., said the President of the FICCI, Mr. Sudhir Jalan at a Press conference in Calcutta on Friday.

According to Mr Jalan, the overall industrial climate in West Bengal was better than in any other States at present. He even did not fail to mention that lesser number of man-days were lost in West Bengal than in Andhra Pradesh last year. The law and order situation in West Bengal is the best too. It cannot be compared to Mumbai as the latter is under a ‘Mafia Raj’ now. In Delhi too criminals rules the roost. Mr. Jalan was confident of a turnaround in the industrial arena in West Bengal as industrialists are shedding their previous notions about industrialisation in West Bengal. During the past fifteen years there has been a significant development in transport communications and productivity is also on the upswing. It can boast of a top-class reservoir of technical personnel ready to utilize their skills in ushering in industrial revival. Mr Jalan has reports that in computer software investment amounting to Rs. 10,000 crores is on the anvil in the State . This will make a sea-change in the economy of the Eastern Region. Videocon , a large electronics product manufacturing company, is also learnt to be making plans for large-scale investment in the State. A few other industrialists have also declared their intentions to set up new industries in West Bengal.

Mr Jalan , however, felt that the media in the State have to shun their negative attitude towards industrialisation in West Bengal. The media is required to highlight the pragmatic policies the State Government is pursuing to give a boost to investment in industries. In this context Mr Jalan referred to the conference held at Raichak in South 24 Parganas district on January17. More than eighty industrial houses of the country and from abroad and their representatives participated in the conference rightly titled , ‘Destination West Bengal". This gives ample proof of industrialists evincing keen interest in investing in the State.
