
| NEWS NOTES Crime rates lowest in Calcutta, says Centre
According to information furnished by the Centre , the crime figures of 12 major cities including Calcutta have been analysed . Total population of each of these cities , the total number of crimes committed in the year under consideration and the rate of different crimes have been incorporated in the document. Side by side, state wise crime figures area also available. Bhattacharya said that the crime rate has been based on one lakh poulation of each state. On the basis of the criteria fixed by the Centre, Calcutta has a total population of 1,23,60,000 . In 1997, the number of crimes, big and small, totaled 2,246 in Calcutta, that is, on the basis of one lakh population , the crime rate in 1997 was 18.17 per cent and this represents only 6.86 percent of the total number of crimes committed in all the 12 important cities . Delhi in 1997 had a population of 1,07,40,000. The number of crimes committed in Delhi , was 6,063, i.e. at the rate of 56.45 per cent and the figure was 18.51 percent of the total number of crimes committed in the 12 important cities. Patna , the capital of Bihar witnessed the highest number of crimes . With a population of 12,30,000, the town recorded 1,398 crimes in 1997 that is 113.66 percent. Percentage-wise the figure was 4.27 per cent of the total number of crimes committed in all the 12 cities. After Patna, Pune and Bangalore respectively hold the second and third place in the crime graph. Metropolitan town Bangalore has a population of 51,40,000. During 1997, 5,307crimes took place in this town , the rate of crime being 103.07 per cent, this cones to 16.20 percent of total number of crimes committed in all the 12 cities. Chennai is another metropolitan town where the population is 62,80,000. Chennai was witness to 1,150 crimes committed in 1997 that is a rate of 18.13 per cent. Apart from the information about the important cities in the country, statewise crime figures crime figures are also available . Orissa and Haryana had the lowest number of crimes in 1997. Thereafter come West Bengal and Assam. |
