| PROSPECTS OIL AND NATURAL GAS CORPORATION (ONGC) POISED TO EXPLORE COALBED METHANE IN WEST BENGAL
Coalbed methane is an emerging technology and viewed as a potential energy resource. Because of its high potential in Damodar Valley Coalfields. This would be a significant area in the future industrialisation scenario of West Bengal. Three blocks have been curved out in Raniganj sub-basin for exploration of CRM. ONGC have applied for Petrolium Exploration Licence(PEL) for North Raniganj Block. The state government has already recommended grant of PEL to ONGC for further clearance by government of India. Minister of Petrolium and Natural Gas has already assured in the last session of parliament that GOI would give a green signal to ONGC on getting the clearance of the state government. Necessary clearance has already been given by Govt. of West Bengal. Coalbed methane is being used extensively as energy resource in USA for power generation as well as domestic industrial usage. In countries like Australia, China etc. serious efforts are being made to utilise this as an alternative fuel. The exploration of CBM in West Bengal is therefore of vital future signicance. |
