The city was witness to two unique processions today
decrying the savage attacks on the minorities by the Sangh Parivar culminating in the
murder of the Christian missionary, Graham Stewart Steins and his two young sons in
Keonjhar, Orissa on Friday night. The Processions were organized by the Calcutta District
Committee of the Left Front and the West Bengal Committee of the Student Federation of
India and the Democratic Youth Federation.
Starting from opposite of the Metro cinema in the Esplanade area around three in the afternoon, the procession in which students and youths participated wended through Lenin Sarani, Park Street and ended in Park Circus Maidan. The participants in the procession condemned the brutal killings of the Australian missionary Graham Stewart Steins and his sons by the Bajrang Dal activists who doused the car in which they were sleeping with petrol and thereafter set it on fire. Slogans such as 'From Pokhran to Keonjhar --- it is my shame and shame of the nation' were raised in the procession. Slogans criticising the BJP-led government's attempts to divide the country on religion its anti-people policies were also raised by thousand of participants. The second procession was started from the Esplanade area in the evening. At the very outset leader of the Calcutta District Committee of the CPI(M) Aloke Majumdar in a speech emphasized the need for untidily fighting the communal BJP an other affiliates of the Sangh Parivar to uphold peace and amity among all communities, Government, non-government employees, men from the unorganized sector, women, participated in the procession went through different routes and finally ended at Park Circus Maidan. |
