Once bitten twice shy

Abhijit Dasgupta

The Trinamul Congress, headed by Ms Mamata Banerjee and an equally violent ally of the BJP has only one agenda in West Bengal --- to create disturbances with criminals called volunteers everywhere in the state. The pattern of depredations of the BJP and the Trinamul Congress are so similar that Left Front leaders and ministers have no hesitation to the two outfits put in one bracket.

The Left Front Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu has described the BJP as barbaric and uncivilised. They have a the record of murdering a Christian missionary, raiding and attacking Christians and churches and demolishing the Babri Mosque of the Muslims in Ayodhya. The Trinamul Congress leader has time and again incited young people to take law upon themselves. Now when police takes action according to rules their leader Ms Banerjee rushes to Delhi to meet Mr. L.K. Advani, Union home Minister to complain that there is no law and order in West Bengal. She wants an inquiry by his ministry.

Inquiry for what? Which outfit other than the Trinamul Congress set ablaze a library in Balpai in Khanakul area in Hooghly district in the recent past?

As if gutting of the Balpai library was not enough, the Trinamul-BJP vandals ransacked the Khanakul Panchayet Samity office on January 5. Then again on February 28, at Ghoradaha in the same areas these vandals resorted to widespread disturbances and looted houses of innocent villages for four to five hours at a stretch that day. The CPI(M) supporters predominantly inhabited the village. The criminals looted 34 houses 29 or which belonged to the members of the Scheduled Caste community. Six women were beaten up and at least fifteen villagers were mercilessly assaulted and valuables taken away. So desperate were the vandals that they placed logs on the road attempting to prevent movement of the police vehicles to the concerned villages. Even when the police reached the Ghoradaha, they started throwing stones and other missiles at the police. Among the injured policemen are the SDPO CI and 14 others. The condition of four of the policemen is stated to be serious. To content the vandals the police first used this and teargas shells. The situation remained beyond control even then and the police was forced to fire 14 rounds, which resulted in the death of a young man, and three others were injured. The body of the boy was recovered from Ghatal area in Midnapore district, which suggested that the criminals were drafted from Midnapore, Bankura to raid villages in Hooghly.

On March 2 again in Gangarampur area in South Dinajpur district the Trinamul criminals shot dead two CPI(M) affiliated West Bengal Krishak Sabha members. The overwhelming success of recently held State conference of the Krishak Sabha in Gangarampur was obviously not to the liking of the Trinamul leadership.

The West Bengal Home (Police) Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya announced that the State Government would firmly deal with Trinamul Congress supporters connected with vandalism in the Khanakul area recently. The State Home (Police) Minister's announcement might have annoyed Ms Mamata Banerjee, and she has rushed to Delhi to persuade the Union Home Minister Mr. L.K. Advani whom she has assiduously avoided these last eleven months and to order an inquiry into the law and order situation in West Bengal. Her purpose is nothing but to get the media attention. Mr Advani had on a previous occasion burnt his fingers while trying to interfere in the state's law and order situation - a subject entirely a domain of the State Government. Advani is expected to follow the dictum; "Once burnt twice shy."
