| Editorial JOKE WITH THE WORKERSBJP-Trinamul Congress (TMC) joint partnership has started a nefarious game with the life of the workers of the public sector enterprises. Earlier on 10th of February, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Mr. Pramod Mahajan announced in a public meeting, organised by TMC at Calcutta that neither a single Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSU) will be closed permanently nor a single worker be retrenched. Though permanent closure of 7 CPSUs in West Bengal were by then, announced by the Government of India and voluntary separation scheme were served upon the workers of those industries with a deadline of 28th February. After the announcement unfortunate workers of those industries became hopeful about continuity of their job in the respective industries. But on 27th February, they understood that not a single paise had been allocated in the Union Budget, presented by the Union Finance Minister in the Parliament. The workers became unable to understand, without any budgetary support, how their units could continue to run. Again on 1st of March, in a hurry, the TMC leader Smt. Mamata Banerjee showed the reporters a letter of Prime Minister Mr. Vajpayee, wherein it was written that the Union Cabinet had taken decision on 23rd of February, to explore the possibilities of revival of these 7 companies and to extend the deadline of VSS for three months more. Though, as this was done in a hurry, the names of 2 such units of West Bengal were missed from the list. What the unfortunate workers could understand from all these? On the one hand they are being assured about the revival of their industry without any budgetary provision and on the other hand they are being asked to be off from the enterprise by accepting VSS. They are really puzzled to understand, without budgetary support and without the workers, how the industries could be revived? If we take that the Prime Minister is correct, then the question arises, why there is no mention in the Budget speech of Finance Minister about the decision, which the Union Cabinet took on 23rd. Naturally, the question comes, who is correct, the Prime Minister or the Finance Minister? This is the role of the Prime Minister of the BJP-led Government and its ally TMC leader Mrs. Mamata Banerjee, who always pretend as the protector of the interest of the country and the people. That is why, they do not mind anything to make such joke with the workers who are in distress. 8th March 1999. |
