Even as the BJP-led government at the Centre and the RSS and its outfits such as the VHP, Bajranga Dal have been assiduously nurturing the communal virus to tear apart the unity of the country and the integrity of its social fabric, the left, democratic and secular parties and groups have taken upon themselves the onerous task of preserving its secular edifice and communal harmony braving the fascist forces.

A countrywide signature campaign reaffirming the peoples' commitment to safeguard and strengthen the secular, democratic foundations was launched at the national level on March6. At a meeting of the left and democratic parties in Delhi on February 20 a target of 10 million such signatures was fixed the aim of which is to protest the county's pluralistic culture and ethos. The Left Front in West Bengal of course fixed a different target for itself - 10 million signatures. West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu launched the programme putting his signature on the document on the day on March 6. Collection of signature will continue till March 21. The Left Front has called upon the people to make a success of the campaign. The frontal organisations of the left parties have also taken upon themselves the task to fulfil the target fixed for the State of West Bengal. The campaign documents will thereafter be forwarded to the President of India, Mr. K.R. Narayanan.

As suggested by Biman Basu, and CITU leader Chittabrata Majumdar, all organisations and groups opposed to communalism have been invited to participate in the signature campaign. So, besides the frontal organisations represented on the National Platform, secular bodies available in West Bengal, have joined in the campaign. The other important façade of the campaign in the state is the involvement of the students, youths and women. The participation of the different segments of the society will make more and more people aware of the grave dangers of communalism.
