| Editorial A DISASTROUS YEAR FOR THE INDIAN PEOPLE T he BJP-led ministry will complete one year of its existence in the office of the Government of India on 19th of March, 1999. The year has been marked as the most disastrous period in the entire history of the country since independence. Not a single area could be found, where the public life has not been vitiated during their stay in the office.During the period, the people witnessed further mortgaging of country's economic sovereignty. Augmentation of policies like opening up the vital sectors like insurance, amendment of the Parent Act offering exclusive marketing rights, 75 percent automatic approval for foreign direct investments and 100 percent automatic approval for NRI investments etc., at the cost of industrial development and self-reliant growth of the economy. Policies of disinvestment of shares of the profitable Public Sector Undertakings for meeting the government's expenditure out of that, closing down of loss making units, further liberalising imports through expanding the list of Open General License (OGL) and lowering of import duties, have aggravated industrial recession further. Instead of generating employment all these steps have pushed the problem of unemployment of the country at an alarming level. Huge concessions for the corporate sector and the affluent sections, imposition of unprecedented tax burden on the common people, unprecedented rise in prices of all essential commodities etc. have resulted in sharp decline in real earning and purchasing power of the common people, which in turn have aggravated poverty in the society. Apart from intensifying the earlier campaign for construction of temple in Ayodhya and spreading deeper hatred against Muslim minorities, the widespread and brutal attacks on the Christian minorities, attempt to prevent the Pakistani cricket tour in India, attacks on Gulam Ali, M. P. Hussain and the film 'Fire' etc. are serious assaults on our secular fabric, which in turn have developed greater sense of insecurity amongst the minorities. Efforts to amend the constitution guaranteeing a five year term for Lok Sabha, proposal to review the constitution and the talk of Presidential form of government etc. are nothing but a naked attempt to facilitate the imposition of a 'Hindu Rashtra'. These attempts are serious threat to the institutions of parliamentary democracy. Shameless process of infiltration of communal minded persons in key administrative positions, placing of top RSS functionaries in all academic and research bodies, especially in higher institutions of historical research, changing of the syllabi and curricula in schools etc. are nothing but steps towards formation of 'Hindu Rashtra'. All these together, constitute the gravest ever assault on India's secular democratic republican policy. The year witnessed complete surrender of India's interest to US imperialism. Complete surrender of India's interests to US imperialism. Behind the back of parliament and the people they have agreed to unilaterally violate the age old political consensus of not signing discriminatory treaties like CTBT. Transfer of corruption cases against Jayalalitha, alliance with Sukharam, Charge of high level corruption in arms deal against the Union Defence Minister etc. are some of the achievements of the BJP-led corruption free(?) government, which came out through media. The greatest achievement of the BJP-led government is to manage somehow to remain in the office against the will of the people of India through opportunistic and unholy alliance with the unscrupulous elements of the country. 15th March 1999. |
