Several thousand port workers staged demonstrations before their office premises at Haldia and Calcutta in protest against the move by the Govt. of India to hand-over several important ports in country to private ownership. The demonstrations were organised at the call of five all India bodies of port workers. Hemlal Chatterjee, General Secretary, Calcutta Port and Shore Mazdur Union and Himangshu Das, another leader of the Union addressed the demonstrators at Calcutta and Haldia respectively. Besides them the rallies were also addressed by the leaders of the several trade unions.

In Calcutta a deputation comprising representatives of different workers' Unions met Chairman, Calcutta Port Trust and handed over a memorandum to the latter. The same was done at Haldia and a memorandum was placed before Deputy Chairman, Haldia Port Authority. It was pointed out by the leaders that the workers will have no other alternative but to resort to movement for indefinite period in case the authorities concerned privatised the major ports including Calcutta and turn the Haldia Port Authority into a separate company.

It is learnt that the Centre has already decided to privatise Haldia port along with two ports each at Tamilnadu and Maharashtra. An attempt was made to introduce a Bill to that extent at the Rajya Sabha which was thwarted by left forces within the House. A fresh move is feared to be on to make the conspiracy successful.
