
| NEWS NOTES ANANDA SHANKAR: LOSS FOR MUSIC WORLD

On Saturday Ananda Shankar's body was taken from the nursing home to his Palm Avenue residence in South Calcutta in the morning when his actress sister, Mamata Shankar, her husband, numerous artistes, musicians paid their last respect to the departed composer. Thereafter the body was taken to Rabindra Sadan where the Congress (I) President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, and West Bengal Information Minister, Buddhadev Bhattacharya musician Pankaj Udhas and others paid their last respects to Ananda Shankar. The body was taken to Keoratala burning ghat thereafter where it was cremated. Ananda Shankar was the son of Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar and nephew of Pandit Ravi Shankar. His sister Mamata is a dancer and actress. Born on December 11, 1942, at Almore, Ananda studied in Scindia School, Gwallor. At Beneras University he trained on the sitar under Guru Lalmoni Mishra. He was exposed to western musical trends in the USA and spent some months with Pandit Ravi Shankar in California. His creations 'Sagar' and 'Sunflower' are emotive and highlight his sensitivity to nature. 'Yugachanda', the multi-media production he staged with his mother in 1972 reflected the rhythms of urban 'Shraddhanjali' was a venture jointly promoted by him and his mother for the International Women's Year. After returning from abroad Ananda assembled an orchestra in 1970 and it appealed to all. Andanda's stage performance, through Indian in origin and spirits were modern in technique and presentation. His wife Tanushree, is the troupe's choreographer. The couple who have performed extensively at home and abroad, have schools in Calcutta and Delhi. Ananda Shankar won the National Award for Best Music Director for Mrinal Sen's film 'Chorus'. He was an honorary citizen of Maryland and Baltimore in the USA. He scored music for big events such as the National Games, Will World Cup Cricket and the SAF Games. |
