
| NEWSNOTES NATO Strikes: Widespread Condemnation
T he sudden and unprincipled attack on Cosovo by NATO has led to widespread condemnation world over. Apart from
some die-hard allies of the US most of countries have been aghast at the machinations of
the US / NATO intrusion in COSOVO. Russia, China and India have led the outcry over what
many feels as precursor to a world war like situation being created by the Americans.
However still, the Eagle is non-chalant.
Right-thinking people have taken the lead in the condemnation all over the world. Athens, London, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Washington bubbled with protests and demonstrations this weekend. In many countries the US / UK embassies and installations have been the point of protest by thousands of. In Moscow, Serb sympathisers fired at the US embassy, in many others people have thrown in rotten eggs- tomatoes towards them. Most of the criticism has come from Russia, with a large population in Russia and erstwhile Soviet states sharing Serb sentiments, the Boris Yeltsin govt has had to chip in. Apart from protesting diplomatically, it is believed that Russia is thinking of giving arms support to the Serbs. Our Correspondent from Delhi points that; India is feelings quite strong over the attacks. Though the protests and demonstrations there are being led by the CPI(M) and other left-democratic forces, the govt has issued a quite strong statement condemning the attack. The Indian Govt has called the "UN to be the first casualty of these intrusions", that the Security Council is quite helpless over these incidents is pointer to what has been the fate of UN.
However the NATO attacks continue, and with more emphasise on ground level attack, the civilian installations have born the brunt of injury over this weekend. Losing Stealth, the US has now chipped in B2 bombers too. Preparations for land attacks are also going on with NATO gathering force in Macedonia and other neighbouring places. Amidst of all these there seems to be some erosion in the unity of NATO, France and Italy today, faced with strong sentiments home asked for more diplomatic level efforts in solving the crisis. In Britain, the Blair govt came in for heavy criticism from Tory and even many Labour MPs in Parliament over unprincipled succumbing to US whims. Former Foreign a secretary and former NATO Secretary General Lord Carrington has said that "we are quite displeased in the manner in which NATO has come to support the Cosovo Liberation Army, who are nothing more than a bunch of Drug traffickers". Ireland, Portugal, Finland, Austria has also condemned the attacks. |
