NATO raids in Yugoslavia: USA condemned
Staff Reporter T housands of students and youths demonstrated before the U.S. Information Centre in the city on March
26 protesting against the NATO's air strikes in Yugoslavia in violation of international
law. The students and youths raised slogans condemning the United States, which want to
impose imperialist hegemony over all self-respecting countries in the world. A meeting was
organized near the U.S. Information Centre which was presided over by the DYFI leader
Badal Datta and addressed by, among to others, by SFI leaders, Tarun Banerjee.
The issue of continued ariel bombardment of Serbin targets by NATO bombers also raised in the West Bengal Assembly, also on March 26, by CPI(M) MLA, Robin Deb, and others. They condemned the US aggression in Yugoslavia violating Yugoslavia's sovereignty over its territory. The West Bengal Federation of United Nations Association condemning the US aggression asked the Americans to immediately order the NATO to stop the bombardment of Yugoslavia. It was interference in the internal matters of a sovereign country, the Association General Secretary said. The Kosovo had to be resolved peacefully, he said. He also urged the United Nations to immediately intervene in the matter; otherwise people would lose faith in the UNO itself. The 12 July Committee too condemned the NATO air strikes in Yugoslavia. Even when the Russian Prime Minister Mr. Primakov cancelled his visit to Washington and the Russian government asked the NATO representative to leave Moscow, the BJP-led government in India did its duty simply expressing concern over NATO strikes in Yugoslavia. The Vajpayee government did not even condemn the air strike by NATO in Yugoslavia. The Vajpayee government, however, described the attacks as interference in the internal matters of a country. It urged that all military action be brought to a halt there. The government statement said such unilateral moves if taken as regional initiatives but without due authorisation of the United Nations system, undermined the authority of the entire United Nations system. The Vajpayee government, according to the statement, held that the air strikes were in violation of the UN charter. These air raids amounted to interfering in the internal affairs of a country. It said that the present crisis in Kosovo could only be resolved through peaceful means and a solution found within the framework of the national sovereignty and trerritorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Vajpayee government also expressed its concern about the possibility of the conflict spreading. Besides, this demonstration of NATO's extra territorial engagement was a development that could only cause anxiety. The government urged that all military actions be brought to a halt, that peace be given a chance and that Yugoslavia a fellow member of the Nonaligned Movement be enabled to resolved its internal issues internally. The politburo of the CPI(M) however strongly condemned the brazen military attack by US-led NATO forces in Yugoslavia. The unprovoked action was nothing but a naked expression of US imperialist aggressiveness to impose its global hegemony. In a statement, the CPI(M) politburo said it was unprecedented in international law that a country was militarily attacked in order to force it to accept an 'agreement' that went against the national interests of the country concerned and its sovereignty. Yugoslavia had clearly stated its intention of resolving the problem of Kosovo Albanians within the framework of its national sovereignty by granting maximum autonomy to the Kosovo region. US imperialism, however, sought to impose an ' agreement' which for the first time in history, involved the stationing of NATO troops on the soil of a non-NATO country. No independent country with self-respect could agree to voluntarily erode its national sovereignty, the statement said. These US-NATO strikes were bound to lead to the tragic less of life of high magnitude. US imperialism, the politburo statement said, was once again adopting double when it expressed concern for the welfare of Kosovo Albanians. Ethinic minorities, such as the Kurds in Turkey, existed in many other countries as well. It was clear that the concern for the Kosovo Albanians was a pretext for US imperialism to impose its agenda in the Balkana. Having already divided former Yugoslavia, US imperialism and its West European NATO allies now sought to completely control the Balkans. The CPI(M) politburo reiterated that with the dismantling of the Soviet Union, the raison d'entre for NATO exercises ceased. Instead of dismantling the NATO, the US imperialism the NATO, the US imperialism was seeking its eastward expansion coopting countries in it to fulfill its design to impose its hegemony over the world. The CPI(M) politburo called upon the Vajpayee government to unequivocally condemn the US-NATO action. Any vacillation on this score would only provide grist to mill of imperialist skulduggery. It also called upon the people of India to protest against growing US imperialist aggressiveness. |
