India Relaxes Visa restrictions for Pak nationals
Special Correspondent I ndia announced its decision to ease visas and travels restrictions for some categories of Pakistani nationals. The relaxation will come into effect on April 2nd 1999.Signiciantly the visa holders of the categories announced would be exempted from police reporting they will be entitled to multiple entry visas of upto one year duration. They will also be exempted from the restrictions of city-specific visa and will be entitled to travel anywhere in India except certain specified areas for which prior permission would be required.According to a foreign ministry press release of government of India," consistent with its policy to promote contacts between the peoples of India and Pakistan at all levels and in keeping with the understanding reached with Pakistan during the visit of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Pakistan on February 20-21,1999 and in the meeting of the External Affairs minister Jaswant Singh with the Pakistan foreign minister Sartaj Aziz at Nuwara Elya on March 19, 1999. The government of India has decided to ease Visa and travel restrictions for some categories. Judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and of various High Courts. Attorney general and Solicitors general and chairperson of the Supreme Court Bar Assocation. Editors-in-chief of national newspapers and owners\princiapal functionaries of national newspapers. Members of national cricket and hockey teams during their tours of India. Members of the national assembly and the senate, leaders and deputy leaders of provisional assemblies and leaders and deputy leaders of opposition in provisional assemblies. Vice chancellors of recognised/approved universities. Secretaries/ secretary rank officers of the federal government of Pakistan. Spouses, dependent children i.e. sons upto 18 years of age and unmarried daughters of persons in above-mentioned categories. Some relaxation has also been made in the regime governing visits of tourist groups to India. Tour operators only will have to report the arrival of a group to the police at each destination with India. Individual members of a tourist group will not be required to do so. This relaxation will come into effect shortly. |
