
| NEWSNOTES Punjab: peasants court arrest enmass, at Chandigarh for Karja Mukti
India News Network M ore than twenty thousands peasants and agricultural labour volunteers courted arrest at Chandigarh on March 30, 1999 after breaking all the obstructions and restrictions imposed under section 144 Cr.Pc. in connection with their on going agitation Karja Mukti stayagarha. The satyagraha volunteers led by comrade Rachhpaul Singh state president and Lehmhar Singh Taggar state general secretary of the Punjab Kisan Sabha and other office beareers of the Sabha surged forward like a river in spate along broad road-Rajpath-going to the state civil secretariat, raising thunderings and militant slogans like "either waive off our loans or arrest us," . When this surging column of militant volunteers reached the barricades at Matka Chowk and broke the obstructions, the authorities were forced to made arrest them enmass.Earlier the Kisan volunteers coming from all over the state through trucks and other means of transport held a massive rally in Parade ground sector 17. S.R. Pillai president All India Kisan Sabha and MP, addressing the rally lambasted the pro-imperialist and export oriented agricultural policy of the government of India which is running the majority of peasantry, hitting the production and food security of the country. He observed the root cause of peasant indebtedness and growing backwardness and immseration of the peasantry in these disastrous policies adopted at the behest of World Bank/IMF/WTO etc. Hailing the volunteers who have come to court arrest Pillai narrated the proud history of Punjab peasantry. He assured all help for the Karja Mukti Satyagraha from the All India Kisan Sabha. He also observed that it is through much militant struggles alone that the bankrupt policy, which is free market friendly and pro-imperialist and anti-peasant, can be defected and peasant can be saved. The rally was also addressed by comrades Lehindra Singh Taggar, Darshan Singh Mattoo, Naryan Singh Saidpur,( Kisan leaders), Suneept Chopra and Chand Singh Chopra (Khet Mazdoor union l;eaders) and Balwant Singh secretary Punjab state Committee of CPI(M). The main demands of the Karja Mukti Satyagraha are waiving of loans of all types amounting to Rs.5700 crores, credited 4% interest to the poor and middle peasants crop insurance scheme, be implemented effectively ensure remunerative prices to all peasants products, simply inputs at subsidized rates ensuring their quality, radical land reforms be implemented and public distribution system must be strengthened. For the further programmes of action and details of next phase of the satyagraha the state working committee is holding its meeting tonight. The satyagarha will be continued till the demands are conceded. |
