The Exide Industries Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Satyabrata Ganguly returned to his Alipore Bungalow unnoticed by anyone on Friday morning, exactly one week after his disappearance from the locality. On April 2, Good Friday, Mr. Ganguly went out for a morning walk from his residence towards the Agri-Horticultural garden early in the morning but since then his where about were not known. Except for cryptic messages such as "I am alive and well" reportedly received from him, nothing more was heard of him in between.

The industrial circle in the city expressed satisfaction over Mr. Ganguly's safe return. In the afternoon at a Press Conference held by him at his residence Mr. Ganguly said that initially by mistake some had detained him among those who wanted a ransom from him but later they let him go. He attributed his safe return to the blessings of his gurudev.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police Calcutta (Detective Department -1) Mr. Narayan Ghosh told reporters on the return of Mr. Ganguly that the police would continue investigation in the case on the basis of a Missing diary lodged with it. The Exide executive however could file a fresh FIR with the thana, if he so desired, Mr. Ghosh said.

Though Home (Police) Minister Mr. Buddhadev Bhattacharya declined to make any comment on Mr. Ganguly's return home, the Chief Minister Jyoti Basu said that he had heard of Mr. Ganguly's return to his residence. Basu, however said that the police were looking into the case "It might have been that Mr. Ganguly was with his acquaintances" these days, Basu added.

Mr Ganguly called the Press conference at his New Road Bungalow in Alipore possibly to clear the mystery surrounding his disappearance. He appeared still dazed. Arrating the events leading to his disappearance, he said as usual on the morning of Good Friday he set out from his bungalow at the crack of dawn. He was proceeding towards the Agri-Horticultural garden. At a little distance he saw a car parked beside the Jalan's house. Two persons were standing by the car apparently trying to repair a punctured tyre. As he neared the car they suddenly pounced on me and finally overpowered me. He cried for help but there was none to help him. Brandishing a revolver and putting the firearm on his forehead they forced him into the car, assaulting him all the time. There were others inside the car too. He was profusely bleeding then. And he was blindfolded and the car speed off with the speed rising gradually. Maybe after around ten hours the car stopped at a place. He was shoved into a small room.

He freshened up himself entering the bathroom, he was hen taken to another room where someone asked him his name in Hindi. Mr Ganguly spelt his name the man wanted to know if he had any independent business. He replied in the negative clarifying that he was a mere executive of a company. He gave details of the members of his family too. Then they demanded a ransom of at least Rs. 20 million. But as he expressed his inability the questioner proposed to take up the matter with what he called his "boss". The next day, Saturday, he 'boss' started questioning him. He was blindfolded as before. Their 'boss' ultimately apologized to him saying that they had committed a mistake. And the 'boss' promised that he would not be required to shell out a ransom to his captors.

The days passed by. He was served food regularly on Thursday night last he was again put into car, although blindfolded. They made him board an A C Sleeper berth of a train. They left giving his Rs. 225 to facilitate his journey. He then untied the knot of the blindfold. He reached Howrah Station by the train.

Till Saturday, the police could not unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Mr Satyabrata Ganguly. Mr Ganguly however, lodged an FIR with the police stating that he had been abducted. Meanwhile, the Calcutta police authorities have decided to set up special to prevent abduction. Patrolling will be intensified in areas where morning walkers are found in good members.
