It is the duty of the Central Govt. to take necessary steps to stop soil erosion and prevent recurrence of floods on the banks of the rivers Ganga and Padma. On this issue the people of Malda district in West Bengal have launched a mass movement led by the left-led Kisan Organisations. To begin with there will be a massive rally and demonstration at the NTPC crossing at Khejuria on April 12 next. Campaign has been started throughout the district to make the rally a big success. Besides, conventions are being held at different places in the district to draw the attention of the public to the gravity of the situation and to the need of their active participation in the movement. Five such conventions were held recently at the instance of the Kisan Organisations and were largely attended. Those were held at Manik Chawk, Milky, Baishnavnagar, Kaliachak and Panchanandapur.

Leaders of peasant and democratic movements addressed those conventions. They blamed the Centre for their shortsightedness in tackling the menace of land erosion and recurring floods in Maldah and Murshidabad districts. It was because of the negligence and step-motherly attitude of the Central Govt. that the problem could assume such destructive proportions. The floods that occurred last year were devastating. Thousands of families were rendered homeless and thrown into desperate situations. Loss of lives and property assumed unprecedented proportions.

The leaders expressed grave apprehensions and pointed out that continuation of the present attitude of the Central Govt. may spell doom in near future not only for the two district i.e Malda and Murshidabad but also for the whole of North Bengal for the entire state as well as for the North East.

It may be recalled in this connection that the river Ganga and Padma are causing havoc every year in the districts of Malda, Murshidabad and Nadia. The magnitude of the problem is so big that it is rather impossible on the part of the West Bengal Govt. to tackle the situation singlehandedly. The Left Front Govt. and the Left Front are abreast of the problem and are trying to do their best. Without adequate and timely central help the situation is bound to go beyond everybody's control and cause indescribable miseries and distress to the people.
