Staff Reporter T he Bakreswar dream has finally come
true. The chimneys came alive as the Governor A.R.Kidwai switched on the thermal power
plant at exactly 11 am on Saturday. The first unit thus went on stream with four others in
the pipeline. There were cheers all around as the Governor lauded the activities of the
West Bengal government and said that this was one example of correct use of technology and
science for the welfare of the people.
To remind the gathering of the various contributions of the people towards the setting up of this project, closed circuit television screens provided a glimpse of incidents of the past; the foundation-lying ceremony, blood donation camps, other memories. The satellite township which has grown as an upshot of this project has a medical centre which was inaugurated by the Governor. Production will start in two other units by June next year. After all the units are lit up, the total production will be to the tune of 630 MW. In a related development, the youth organisation of the CPI(M), the Democratic Youth Federation (DYF), has decided to organise a gathering of more than a lakh at the end of this year to commemorate the sacrifices of comrades who gave it their all to make the project the success against various odds like the discriminatory tactics of a biased Centre. Fifty-two youths gave blood as a token gesture on Saturday, a reminder of the tireless efforts of the comrades who collected blood through donations to raise funds for the project. The slogan that was raised throughout the state was that emphasising the need for more Bakreswars and Haldias since these projects had gone a long way in introducing and creating more jobs and breaking the myth of the investor situation in the state as an unfriendly one.The victory that has been evident through the commissioning of the Bakreswar power plant will go a long way in boosting the industrial confidence of the state. |
