Bengal Celebrates May Day

West Bengal celebrates historic May Day with the participation of millions of working people. Left Trade Unions has taken leading role to organise meetings, processions flag hosting and other programmes to celebrate the occasion. West Bengal Chief Minister, and veteran trade union leader Jyoti Basu said in a message that the industrial management should keep good relations with the workers at the same time workers have to act in responsible manner. He also said, workers should realise the relevance of the present situation. They are to consolidate themselves to combat the odds. Referring the left front's rule in West Bengal Basu said, since 1977 we have been working with the priority in the interest of the working class we have been able to maintain and protect the democratic rights of common people in West Bengal. We need trade unions support to strengthen Left Front Governments pro-working class activities.

In the morning of May Day West Bengal has witnessed the hosting of Red Flags in number of places through out the state. The workers of different factories have gathered in the places of flag hosting and took the oath of continuing united struggle against imperialism and capitalist exploitation. The labour department of West Bengal has organised meeting in Calcutta to celebrate the occasion. Ministers of different departments attended the programmee the artists of the labour welfare centre have staged cultural programmee highlighting the glory of May Day. The city of Calcutta has taken a new shape in the afternoon with number of processions attending the rally organised by left trade unions. Workers from the factories of Calcutta, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and other neighborly districts attended the rally with red flags. In the districts of North Bengal May Day is also being celebrated with the meetings, seminars, and processions. The Sahid Minar rally was addressed by Niren Ghosh (CITU), Chittabrata Mazumdar (CITU), Kamalapati Roy (AITUC), Saral Deb (TUCC), Chunilal Dasgupta (12th July Committee), Ashoke Ghosh (UTUC), Sanat Dutta (UTUC-LS), etc. The meeting preside by Sankar Saha.
