Jyoti Basu, the CPI(M) politburo member and the Chief Minister of West Bengal, has criticised, the Congress, Samajbadi Party and two partners of the West Bengal Left Front, for their failure to provide an alternative government at the Centre after the BJP-led coalition was voted out of power in Delhi. He felt that the Congress stuck to an opportunistic policy ignoring the grave danger posed by the BJP to the secular fabric of the country. Samajbadi Party, the Forward Bloc and the RSP also behaved irresponsibly, unable to gauge the danger the virus of communalism BJP was spreading to destroy the integrity of the country. Basu has made these observations in an article in the CPI(M) daily "Ganashakti" published on May 1 in the city.

Basu said, the country was heading for another Lok Sabha election. Only one year after the country had gone through one such election. It was not an welcome development through. They were beset with numerous problems, so also was the country. The BJP-led government had paid no attention to the burgeoning problems. Last year, after the election the BJP cobbled together a majority dangling baits before allies and new-found allies and formed the government although the party had failed to with the majority of seats on its own. For one year the opportunistic alliance led by the BJP survived only making concessions to the allies and failing to govern despite tall talks of 'ability' and 'stability'. Shorn of all morality, the BJP chose to cling to the seat of power only compromising with allies giving them concessions, political and otherwise. But the BJP during this period too was steadfast, trying all possible ways to build a Hindu Raj. The 13 months they were in power, were lost in settling intra-coalition strives. There was not a single day when the intra-coalition dispute did not come up. As a consequence, the major partner of the coalition, AIADMK withdrew support from the Government. The government was reduced to minority and voted out of power. Baits, inducements office of profit could not save the BJP-led government. Even pressure on some of the allies also did not work. But instead of admitting defeat, the BJP again surfaced with a claim that they had the requisite majority in the Lok Sabha. In plain and simple words, the BJP resorted to horse-trading to sew up a majority in the Lok Sabha. Can an opportunistic party like the BJP serve the country at all?

Not for a single day the BJP during the past 13 months ever gave up its communal politics. Rather to achieve their communal goal they resorted to devious means of campaigns. The art of governance was given a good-bye, the country's economic sovereignty was in peril and the relations with neighbouring countries touched the bottom rung of the leader. In the mater of foreign policy, it is now an open surrender to the imperialists. The attacks on the minorities have been stepped up.

Basu said that after the defeat of the BJP in the confidence vote in the Lok Sabha an opportunity was thrown up to the Congress to provide an alternative government. The CPI(M) had all along made its points clear, that it would give issue-based support to the Congress to form a government to corner the communal forces and to preserve secularism in the country.

The Congress being weighed down by its narrow political interests was hesitant but when the Congress got over this ambivalence, a party of the Third Front, and two small parties of the Left Front failed to realize the gravity of danger being posed by communalism to secularism in India.

Consequently the Congress failed to form an alternative government at the Centre. Of course during all these exercises, the Congress stuck to an opportunistic policy and put a lower priority to communalism. Again when the prospects of another alternative government brightened the Congress too backtracked and offered to the BJP in a platter the responsibility of the caretaker government. The Swamajbadi Party two constituents of the Left Front and the Congress as were alleged to have behaved irresponsibly in such a critical situation. The responsibility of the Congress being a large party was more in the situation.

Basu said that the secular forces and parties should have behaved more responsibly to get over the challenges of communalism. He hoped that the secular parties and forces would help consolidate the to corner all democratic and secular forces the communal parties like the BJP in future.
