Special Correspondent T he Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission called for minimising the use of highly polluting Non-renewable Energy Sources. Speaking at an international seminar on Environment Sustainability through Architecture and Energy Management in Building, Shri K.C. Pant, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission said that energy conservation should be the focus for habitat design. He said assessment of energy inputs in building and construction must take both a life-cycle and a life-style view of energy usage. He was of the view that cognizance should also be taken of the fact that buildings are durable in nature, and the life-styles of its occupants are likely to change over its life-time. Thus what may be energy-conserving for a particular standard of living may not be so as the economic status of the occupants improve.Shri Pant observed that the water shortage problem would shortly overtake the energy crisis. He said studies indicate that at current rates of growth of population and per capita water consumption, almost all urban agglomerates in the country would face acute shortage of even drinking water within the next decade. Architecture and building design must take into account this reality, since methods of augmenting urban water supply are limited and recourse will have to be taken to developing suitable water harvesting and recycling systems within the design of urban habitats. |
