| NEWS NOTES West Bengal Shows a New Way in Generation of Electricity combining Diesel and WindBengal Celebrates May Day
Sangram Guha T hat diesel is one of the sources to generate electricity is well known. The same is true about utilising wind as one of the sources. But so far, no attempt is known to have been made anywhere to generate electricity by combining diesel and wind as sources. An optimum combination of the two will ensure lesser cost and pollution-free atmosphere. Such a project has been taken up in West Bengal under the guidance of "WEBREDA", a company set up by the science and technology department of the Govt. of West Bengal. The project, when implemented, would open up new horizons in the sphere of producing electricity by non-conventional means. The project is being sponsored by Indo-Canadian Environment Facility (ICEF) and Sagardwip, an island in Sundarbans area, has been chosen as the project-site. The first experiments were made successfully in a Laboratory at Halifax in Canada. But application of this new technology is being made first at Sagardwip. According to Mr. Santipada GanChowdhury, Director, Re-usable Energy department, the said project would cost about Rupees 50 million. The work will begin within a few days and will take about a year to finish. It would be funded jointly by ICEF, the Govt. of India and the West Bengal government. When generation starts the villagers would get electricity for at least 10 hours everyday. The West Bengal govt. would like to project Sagardwip as an exhibit in the sphere of utilisation and use of non-conventional sources of electricity. Sagardwip is the largest island in the Sundarbans delta, which is about 100 kilometres from Calcutta. Two rivers and the Bay of Bengal surround the island. The Panchayet Raj introduced by the Left-Front Govt. in West Bengal has brought in Sagardwip, along with other rural areas, the benefits of economic and other developments achieved. It was inconceivable even a few year back, to reach electricity to the islands of the delta. But "WEBREDA" has reached the area with the magic lamp of Alladin in their hands. Solar electricity has already been introduced in the area. A diesel power station of 500 KV capacity has been built at Rudranagar. But this time a complete new experimentation has been taken up to build up environment-friendly projects. Under the scheme electricity will be generated by wind when it would blow strongly. But as soon as the flow of wind will weaken, the diesel plant would start operating. A state-of-the-art computer will supervise the functioning of the plant. The computer will direct the diesel engine when to take and how much to take the supply of diesel. That decision will be taken by the computer taking into calculation the velocity of winds. An optimum combination of diesel and wind will bring down cost of generation considerably. It may be mentioned that a number of solar generation plants are already in operation in some villages of the Sundarbans. |
