New Delhi Bureau

The indefinite hunger strike by the JNUSU has entered its 6th day today, with the health condition of Naseer Husain (Vice President, JNUSU) and fellow student Abhay Kumar deteriorating fast. To intensify the struggle, another fellow student, Manoj Purohit has joined the indefinite fast from today. It is to be noted that the parallel hunger strike by Jatin Mohanty under the ABVP banner was called off today when he was admitted to the hospital following a sharp deterioration in his health condition.

The Karamchari association has come out in support of the JNUSU agitation and both the unions have decided to observe a JNU bandh on 10th May 1999, to press for the following demands.

  1. Implementation of 5th Pay Commission recommendations for JNU Employees.
  2. Withdrawal of the letters written by the chief proctor and vice chancellor threatening a ban on political activity in JNU.
  3. Revocation of punishment given to students for political activities like making speeches and writing pamphlets.

The teaching community has also come out in open support of the JNUSU agitation with 31 teachers signing a joint appeal to the JNU administration in support of our demands.

The JNU administration, reeling under the continued pressure from all sections of the university community is desperately trying to buy peace. The JNU administration accepted one of the demands, seeking a reversal of the decision to impose sine die in Sabarmati Hostel, yesterday. The dean of Students also issued an appeal to lift the hunger strike today.

The JNUSU has rejected these half-hearted efforts by the JNU administration to resolve the crisis emphatically and has decided to hold a massive demonstration against the JNU administration on Monday morning to press for the demands.
