
| NEWS NOTES Shalimar Works Breaking new grounds
Staff Reporter T he 400 tons merchandise vessel built by the century - old ship building and repairing year Shalimar Works Ltd. Located on the western bank of the Hoogly was floated on the river on Friday signifying that the unit is venturing into building bigger vessels. It has become one of the biggest ship-repairing units too.The Shalimar Works Limited is a Government of West Bengal Company, manned and managed by a dedicated and motivated team of skilled and experienced workers and managers today. SWL's well equipped and large engineering workshop is located on the bank of the river Hoogly on an area of about six acres of land. It is easily accessible by rail and road. It is also capable of buildings imultaneously five medium size vessels. Among its diversified activities, SWL is presently constructing a 32 ton Bollard Pull Tug for Visakhapatnam Port Trust, one catamaran Inspection Launch for Sunderban Tiger Reserve, Government of West Bengal, a multipurpose survey vessel for Calcutta Port Trust and one 300 ton water barge for Andaman and Nicobar Administration. These vessels are at various stages of construction. Shalimar Works Limited is set to achieve milestones during the current year. In May, June and July one ship will be launched every month. In August, September, October and November one ship is planned to be delivered every month. The technology developed by SWL over the years speaks of the design strength in shipbuilding of the public sector unit. Shalimar Works, established under the ageis of M/S Turner & Morrison, about a century ago for construction and repairing of Ships grew to be one of the biggest Ship Repairing Units of India during the Brtish Rule. The assets of the Company were taken over by the Govt. of West Bengal and "The Shalimar Works (1980) Limited" (SWL) was incorporated in 1980. Manned and managed by a dedicated and motivated team of skilled and experienced workers and managers, today, SWL has emerged as a major Ship-building and Ship Repairing Unit in the Eastern Coast of India. SWL's well equipped and large Engineering Workshop, located on an area of about six acres of land on the west bank of the river Hooghly, having easy access by rail and road, is capable of building simultaneously five medium size vessels. SWL has embarked on an ambitious modernisation programme, which includes acquisition of a CNC machine. SWL also expects to obtain ISO 9000 certification shortly.
