ho care's for one's Origin?

By Dee Gee

Who cares for one's land of origin? Does anybody know many of our senior politicians, some of them having berths in the present Union Cabinet were born in the land which belongs to the foreign country now? Did anybody care to know what was the land of origin of Sister Nivedita? Even if there be any, BJP surely not. Was it because she was disciple of Swami Vivekananda? The Indian National Congress was founded by an English Man and chaired by persons like Annie Besant and Neile Sengupta of foreign origin. No Indian questioned nor was the INC taken to task for it. If the country's constitution permits and above all, if the electorate choose any person of foreign origin to be the Head of the Government what is there to make it an issue.

Yet it has been made an issue. First BJP and then a section of Congress leadership. BJP's motive is understandable. It wants to garner political mileage in the hustling. But what makes Sharad-Sangma-Tariq trio of INC to raise the issue. Do they really believe there will be fall-out on the electorate if Italy-born Sonia Gandhi is projected as future Prime Minister of India? Then why did they choose her as President of their party? And how could INC under her Presidentship win hands down in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan state assembly elections, both being in the Hindi heartland, hitherto known as BJP bastions? In fact, issues concerning the people of the country, their daily life and livelihood matter most, not the land of origin of the persons who contest or steer the party in the elections. The rising prices of onions cost the BJP governments in Rajasthan and Delhi, despite display of their jingoistic nationalism over Pokhran -II nuclear blast.

BJP knows its own track record. There is nothing to boast of. It has already alienated the people by its Hindutva programme and pro-MNC economic policies. Now BJP is in search of an issue. So has come handy the issue of so called "foreign origin." While kneeling down before World Bank - IMF - WTO and allowing international finance capital to enter the Indian market and fleece the people, BJP raises the bogey of "danger of a person of foreign origin heading the government." What a deception!
