CITU calls upon the state Units and unions to launch the campaign against the bombing by NATO in Yugoslavia. The General Council of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (C.I.T.U.) unanimously adopted a resolution denouncing the barbaric bombardment of Yugoslavia. After its meeting held at Ghaziabadd, on 28-30 May’99 CITU said, "This is a blatant act of aggression upon a sovereign country by the U. S. imperialists and its cohorts bypassing the United Nations with contempt aiming at dismembering Yugoslavia. They have fuelled the ethnic conflict within Yugoslavia and are working for the complete dismemberment of the country by directly helping the secessionist forces under KLA, so as to have U. S. hegemony world over. NATO's open declaration that it can militarily intervene in ethnic and likewise strifes any where in the world amounts a threat to India also, where they are boosting the conflict in Kashmir and also the communal forces.

"This meeting of the General Council of C.I.T.U. calls upon entire working class to stand up and fight against this barbaric bombing of Yugoslavia and demand immediate stoppage of this act of aggression and disbandment of the NATO. We demand that there should be peaceful solution of the ethnic problems within the framework of Yugoslavia and the solution should be found out by the people of Yugoslavia only and not by the NATO.

"This meeting also happily notes that working class and common people in the country and outside all over the world are condemning this attack in the strongest voice.

"The General Council of C.I.T.U. call upon the working class in India to join the international movement and lead a sustained campaign against the bombardment and aerial attack of Yugoslavia.

" This meeting calls upon the State Committees and the Unions to launch the campaign against the bombing."

 POST-POKHRAN AND POST-CHAGAI JINGOISM OPPOSED

"This meeting of the General Council of CITU also being held in Ghaziabad from the 28th to 30th May, 1999, views with concern the recent escalation of conflict in Kargil area on Indo-Pakistan border.

"The attempt by Pakistan to resort to intensive shelling along the border, to provide cover for the infiltrators to occupy the Kargil area and utilise the subsequent situation to alter the status quo on the actual line of control, poses a grave threat to the security of our country. This attempt must squarely be dealt with and the Government of India must take all necessary steps to push back the infiltrators. The C.I.T.U. supports the action of our armed forces in the border area to deal with the infiltrators. But at the same time, we deplore the complacency on the part of the Government of India not having exercised the required vigilance, as such infiltration was anticipated at this time of the year.

"The C.I.T.U. cautions that the present Governments in office in both Pakistan and India, must consciously desist from the temptation allowing the post-Pokhran and post-Chagai jingoism to blind their sense of judgement. This meeting calls for restraint on the part of the Governments on both sides so as not to allow the present situation to escalate into a major conflict.

"This meeting demands of the Government of India to deal with the present situation keeping in view the security interests of the country and the imperative need to maintain good neighbourly relations with Pakistan, conducive to carrying on constructive dialogue on all bilateral issues."
