The West Bengal Government has taken up a scheme in 1998 for financial assistance of Rs 500 per month to the workers of industrial units which are under lock-out or closure or suspension of work, etc, for a period of one year on that date. The workers will be eligible to this benefit only upto the age of 58 years.

1. The Government of West Bengal for one-year w.e.f introduced the scheme for "Financial Assistance to the Workers in Locked-out industrial units" in West Bengal. 1.4.98 and implemented by the Labour Directorate, West Bengal.

ii) 190 eligible units have been identified.

iii) About 31,500 applications have been received by Labour Directorate, out of which about 27,600 applications have been admitted.

iv) About Rs 16.45 crores has been released for payment as financial assistance through 212 branches all over West Bengal of SBI, UBI, UCO Bank, CBI, Allahabad Bank and Howrah Gramin Bank.

v) The scheme has been extended for another year i.e. April, 1999-March, 2000 covering industrial units under lock out for more than one year on 31.3.99.

This is a unique scheme by any State Government to extend financial assistance to workers who are rendered unemployed due to lockout, closure etc.
