The Chief Minister Mr. Jyoti Basu has returned to Calcutta after his three weeklong foreign trip to the UK. The Chief Minister went to London for medical treatment and also to attend few programmes. Even in the time of vacationing and medical check up, Jyoti Basu was closely associated with West Bengal and national affair. At the time of departure from the country, Jyoti Basu has expressed his strong unhappiness over the procedure of governor transfer by the caretaker Government at the center. Basu said, Chief Minister was not consulted over this matter defying the norms and forms of parliamentary democracy. It was under the pressure from all corners throughout the country, central home minister L.K. Advani has telephoned Basu in London to intimate the centre’s decision to appoint Mr. Shymal Kr. Sen, Acting Chief Justice Calcutta High Court as the Governor of West Bengal on temporary basis. During his stay in London, Basu has attended lunch on meeting at London School of Economics. Basu explained the national situation with special emphasis to Kashmir before the experts like Tonny Giddings, George Iloto, Rosemerry Dagal, Fiona Hodson. Chief Minister had a meeting with Purendu Chatterjee regarding the progress of Haldia Petro Chemicals Project. Jyoti Basu has received regular telephone call from Buddhadev Bhattacharya acting Chief Minister of West Bengal, for apprising the situation of the state. He has also received call from Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdul Samad for inviting him at the inauguration ceremony of Calcutta – Dhaka Bus service on 19th June 1999. Chief Minister has also enjoyed the charm of World Cup Cricket and congratulated Saurov Ganguly and other Indian cricketers in London. Fomer Prime Minister of India V.P. Singh. Who is also in London for treatment met Jyoti Basu and discussed the national situation on the eve of the poll.
