Traveler's Note
Munshiari picturesque town
by Manab Lahri
Munshiari in Kumaon district is a picturesque
town. It is cold and the sudden rains can spell problems for any tourist,
caught as he might be in the accompanying snow. But the sunset opens up vistas of new
splendour; the burst of fire from behind the cloud cover could have been any the subject
of wild imagination of a sensitive painter had it not been for real. It is indeed a sight
for the gods and being part of the scene is an experience in itself. The foothills of
Panchachulli mountains cover a wide expanse but Munshiari has carved out its own niche,
with its own small industry in weaving. The carpets and blankets made by the indigenous
weavers at Munshiari are warm; it would not be an exaggeration to say that even a solitary
cover- known locally as the "thumba'' - is enough to keep the body warm in the biting
cold. Munshiari may not be as popular a tourist spot as some others are now.But with time
and more and more people visiting this quaint but delightful little town,
Munshiari will definitely find place soon in all the major tourist maps of the passionate
traveller.
