| NEWS NOTES Bangla in govt
Staff Reporter T he West Bengal state government has in principle taken a decision to implement Bangla as the language medium in government correspondence and official work. A culmination of a sustained programme and movement vindicating the use of Bangla in official work, the West bengal government has now decided to issue all government circulars in bangla and decided that even sundry matters like number plates of buses be made out in the language. The chief proponents of this policy have been the information minister Buddadev Bhattacharya and state CPI(M) secretary Anil Biswas and the Politburo member Biman Bose. Mr Bhattacharya, has said that the policy has only been adopted in principle and that the it was required that the Assembly pass the resolution to implement it. He has also said that the policy should not be seen from a myopic angle and that it was necessary to understand the problems attached with such a policy since there were lots of hurdles involved. He said that there was nothing mandatory about the use of bangla and there would be ``imposition.'' He added that the effort would be to ensure that the language be used to help the region grow out of its ``colonial hangover'' but at the same time ensure that the merits of the English language not be forgotten. At the same time, Mr Bhattacharya said that the government was also agreed in principle to changing the name of ``Calcutta'' to ``Kolkata'' and West Bengal'' to ``Pashcim Banga'' for official purposes. |
