The Left Front government in West Bengal has sounded prominent individuals, corporate houses seeking their help in starting a Bengali channel in the television as an alternative to programmes telecast by the electronics media mostly representing a decadent western culture.

The Bengali channel is likely to cost around Rs. 500 million, according to the Information and Cultural Affairs Minister, Buddhadev Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya feels that without an alternative TV channel of its own, the State cannot effectively counter the programmes telecast by foreign channels, which are corrupting the adolescent and the youth alike. The State Government, Bhattacharya has said, will not in any way control such Bengali Channel when it is formed. He has announced that it will concentrate on providing infrastructure facilities to the proposed channel and not impose its authority on it. Artistes would have full liberty in projecting the culture of Bengal through their productions.
