From Threat to Oppurtunity

When the BJP led Govt. lost the vote of confidence in Lok Sabha last April, L K Advani told the demoralised BJP workers that this threat to the chances of BJP's rule at Centre would be converted into an 'opportunity' to improve BJP's electoral prospects. Whatever be the electoral prospects, true to Advani's words, BJP appear to be over keen to use its tenure as a Caretaker Govt. at the Centre to improve its election funds.

Treating its non-accountability to the Lok Sabha, as an opportunity, the Govt. is going to finalise as much high value deals as possible. Rs. 600 billion deal for NTPC power projects is being finalised in May- June. Policy decision on Telecom, giving a bonanza of Rs. 400 billion to private Cellular operators has been declared after unceremoniously throwing out Jagmohon from Communication portfolio just because he was opposing this decision. In oil sector moves are afoot to hand over oil pipelines owned by PSUs to private sector/multinationals. The caretaker Govt is disinvesting Rs. 1,000 billion worth Govt. shares. The Civil Aviation Minister is trying all his tricks to pressurise Indian Airlines to procure aircrafts worth Rs. 35 billion.

Never in the history of this country after independence a caretaker ministry has flouted so blatantly all the connections and norms to take such decisions which are not only having serious policy implications for the future but are also huge big 'financial deals' involving thousands of millions of public money.

'Caretaker ministry' is taking all the care to use the opportunity to make mockery of Indian constitution and democracy.
