Special Correspondent T he CPI(M) and CPI have decided to give a thrust to the anti-people telecom policy and recent changes to it, disinvestments in the public sector and the opening up of various sectors to the private sector by asking the people to observe a protest day nationwide on July 16.A joint statement, issued by the two parties, said that the caretaker government of the BJP coalition should follow some basic norms in taking important policy decisions which were manifest in the changes sought to be made in the telecom policy which was obviously aimed to line the pockets of private business houses like Reliance and Essar. The statement was also highly critical of the disinvestment in MTNL, VSNL, GAIL and IOC and pointed out that these steps had no moral or legal sanction. The President has been urged to take action in this regard. The CPI(M) state secretary in West Bengal, Anil Biswas, has said that it was high time that the people organised and took part in a nationwide movement against such practices and policy steps being taken by a government which had no authority to do so in the first place. Biswas said that the people of West Bengal, alert as always, would rise in protest and observe July 16 in a befitting reply to the anarchy let loose by the BJP government at the Centre. |
