The state government of West Bengal has decided to set up coordination committees at the district levels to take forward its self-employment programmes with greater tempo. The committees will include all the elected representatives of the district concerned while bank nominees will also be involved. The youth welfare department will liasion with the various programme controllers for better coordination.

The finance minister,Asim Dasgupta, is the head of the state-level apex body which has six other ministers in it.The committee has already met twice. The message that gone out is that the programmee must percolate to the lower level and the grassroots.``We will lend a one-window system character to this programme,'’Dr Dasgupta said. The programme, it is expected, will go a long way in alleviating the distress of educated youths who have to run from pillar to post in search of jobs and employment or business opportunities in the face of indifference by banks and other apex agencies. It is significant that the state government has acted promptly on the memorandum given to the chief minister,Jyoti Basu, by the DYFIat a public rally in Calcutta on April where it was pointed out that the educated youth must be given an opportunity to use their expertise towards fruitful enterprise.

The district-level committees will also go in for a major information campaign and bring out booklets which will detail the opportunities available and loans to be sanctioned.
