Staff Reporter

The West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu has recently written to the Railway Minister, Mr. Nitish Kumar requesting him to look into the move of the authorities of the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi, to shift their purchase office and Receipt Inspection Depot from Calcutta.

This office and the Depot have long been in existence in the city for procurement of various kinds of materials from Calcutta, Howrah and neighbouring areas for DLW's production at Varanasi.

Basu in his letter to the Railway Minister said that he understood that the DLW authorities had decided recently to shift both the purchase office and the Receipt and Inspection Depot to Varanasi. Even the shifting operations had already started.

Basu wondered what exactly prompted the DLW authorities to take this decision --- if at all already taken, ---- particularly when these offices have been operational for a considerably long period of time in the city. Basu doubted, if there were any justifiable grounds for shifting the concerned offices from Calcutta and requested Mr. Kumar to urgently look into the matter to dissuade the DLW from taking any such decision to shift the offices from Calcutta.
