bakresh.jpg (16711 bytes)One of the most important faculties of human beings is the ability to dream; even more vital has been the intention and capability of a few to make these dreams happen. On September 28, 1988, the Left Front government dared to dream about a project which for many at that time, seemed to be part of fanciful imagination if not downright political gimmickry; on Saturday, the first test operation and synchronisation of unit 1 of the Bakreshwar Thermal Project was not only successful but was a slap on the face of those who had saw only meaningless political slapsticks in it. It has taken 11 years for the chimneys to light up at Bakreshwar but by all accounts, it has been worth the wait. If ever dreams had been vested with power, this is it.

The first test synchronisation will be inaugurated formally by the Governor Shyamal Sen on July 23 while chief minister Jyoti Basu will press the button to begin commercial production in November after which power, which has flowed from the toiling masses and their work after more than decade of sheer sincere labour, will reach the nation and trickle into the national grid system through the various substations and networks, making it yet another cornerstone of Bengal’s contribution to the national cause.

CITU state secretary Chittabrata Majumder put the point across at a mass rally in Bakreswar on Saturday when, shortly after the synchronisation of the plant, he said that the project, now that it has become a reality, was ample proof of what the Left Front government meant to do for the uplift of the people in the state. He said that not only as a development project, the lighting up at Bakreswar was a sound riposte to those who had criticised the work culture in Bengal since it had come up seven months ahead of schedule.

bakresh1.jpg (10648 bytes)He said that people of Bengal had yet again demonstrated what the endeavour could do in the face of adversity, be it in the shape of Central government meddling and non-cooperation or simple wayward policies as in liberalisation and the new economic policy The cost of the project had also been minimised and was far less than the projected expenses, yet again showing what sincere and channelised strategy backed by a proper work ethic could achieve even during troubled times and unhelpful quarters like successive government at the Centre inimical and indifferent to the development and welfare of the people and its policies. Bakreswar had concretised a dream as no other single project had perhaps in the recent history of the nation.
