Staff Reporter S hamit Khemka was an internet freak; he would have stayed outside jail if he had chosen to be just that. Instead, the young man heaped a deliberate scorn a community which happened to be Bengalis and it was not without little significance and incidence that Khemka had stayed in Kolkata all his life. For long, he had been doing his best to pour forth his brand of vitriol through the net against Bengalis in general and chief minister Jyoti Basu in particular; in fact, the website which he created to do so was named in a fashion which would put those with whom he has now been lodged to some shame. It took a while to hunt him down and his website erased from public view. Khemka is now in jail and has appealed to the Supreme Court for bail and stated that his site had been misused without his knowledge; however, why he chose to apologise to Mr Basu for his misdoing in a letter would be something to ask his lawyers about. But that is of sundry consequence. The matter here is more important and serious. Khemka deserves the maximum punishment that should be awarded to those who are bent on besmirching the name and honour of others without any definite purpose other than the imbecile goings-on which many can pass off a the ravings of a lunatic. His lawyers are trying to get him out of the rut by saying that the site could have been misused without his knowledge; we shall not go into the freak nature of internet crime. What is important is that Khemka, once proved guilty, should be held a s a test case so that nobody is allowed ever to transgress the moral and public authority to misuse any handle which can even remotely endanger another persons or communitys well-being. That should be the lesson in the Khemka case. |
