NEWSNOTES
Ringing Telephones
The  BJP led central government has been accused of perpetrating a big scam by its decision to allow the private telecom operators to switch over ("migrate") from the earlier license fee regime to a new, revenue sharing arrangement; First it changed its communications minister, and then days to go for polls it announced this bonanza. Why this hurry? In fact Sitaram Yechury, member of the CPI(M) Polit Bureau, has described it as "one of the biggest scams of the millennium."

JP  boasted of three ‘B’s viz., ‘Bomb’, ‘Bus’ and ‘Budget’ as major achievements (!) of the 13 month Govt. They could have added another ‘B’ standing for ‘BAIL OUT PACKAGE’ for private parties in their list of achievements.

After all, free trade is no panacea for all the ills, which a developing economy is afflicted with. Without curing the ailment, trade liberalisation may aggravate it, as market has no answer to macroeconomic distortions, disorders and disparities.

Talking Point

Thackeray Tamed
lbball1.gif (110 bytes)Bal Thackeray, for those of us who have some faith in the basics of science, has proved to be a test case in how a pin can successfully prick a balloon and deflate it to make a valid point. However, the Election Commission's landmark ruling and the President's subsequent endorsement that the Shiv Sena chief will not be able to exercise his right to vote for six years for an inflammatory speech should not be treated as a simple handing out of the law of the nation; this step will go a long way in reemphasising our commitment to the tenets of democracy and secularism of India.
