| NEWSNOTES On Wadhwa Commission Report
India news network T he BJP-led government has made public the report of the Justice Wadhwa Commission of Inquiry appointed to enquire into the killing of Mr. Graham Staines and his two children. The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) had strongly criticised the decision of the Union Cabinet to appoint such a Commission. In its statement on January 28, 1999, the Polit Bureau had stated: "The decision of the Union Cabinet to appoint a Judicial Commission of Inquiry, `into the circumstances relating to the killing of an Australian missionary and his two sons in Orissa', is a blatant attempt to cover up the role of the various outfits of the RSS-headed Saffron Brigade." Further, the Polit Bureau had commented that "It is, indeed, strange that such a decision has been taken when both the National Human Rights Commission and the National Minorities Commission (both statutory bodies) have already sent their teams for inquiry." The findings contained in the report of the Justice Wadhwa Commission confirm the correctness of the stand taken by the CPI(M) at that time. The Wadhwa Commission has found an individual, Dara Singh, solely responsible for the gruesome killings. According to the Commission, Dara Singh is not a member of any organisation nor was any organisation involved in the murders. How the Commission came to such a conclusion in the face of substantial and widespread evidence of the role Dara Singh played in the RSS outfits' campaign in the area is inexplicable. Even the instances cited by the Commission of Dara Singh's criminal attacks on Muslim cattle traders is itself revealing as this campaign was initiated by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal. The BJP-led government's efforts to whitewash the enormity of the crime and the culpability of the RSS outfits will not deceive anyone. Seven months after the murders, Dara Singh is still at large and the politics of hate against religious minorities gets official protection. |
