NEWSNOTES
Manifesto for a Poll
The CPI(M) manifesto charges the 13 month rule of the BJP as an unmitigated disaster for the country which saw - an aggravated strain on the national unity, instilled fear and insecurity amongst the minorities, gave a bonanza to the foreign capital and big business and promoted the large scale penetration of the administration by the RSS. It further reminds the voters about the back breaking price-rise last year, and the onion price rise scandal and the Dropsy deaths in Delhi under the BJP government.

Five years back, there was uproar in the country when US multi-national Enron,s Executive revealed that $60 million were spent on educating Indian politicians/bureaucrats. This was a part of the package when Enron’s Power Project was finalised by Maharashtra Govt. BJP had also joined others in ridiculing Mr. Sharad Pawar, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra and other Congress politicians on their newly acquired ‘education’ from US multi-national.

Changes in Patent act, implications, and problems.

lbball1.gif (110 bytes)For the last two weeks, we have raised two talking points which have been crucial to our immediate future; one has been the debate over the change of the name of Calcutta to Kolkata while another focussed on Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s disenfranchisement by the Election Commission. Both these issues, we feel, need to be addressed to as responsible citizens who have a duty towards this land called India.

This week we have come face to face with one of the worst land transport disasters ever in India: the twin-train tragedy at Gaisal, North Dinjapur, on August 2 morning which has killed 300 people. There is now no point in apportioning blame; the idea should now be to talk about and discuss ways of getting out of these recurring accidents and put a system in place by which we are spared this colossal human waste and loss of innocent lives.

Think and make life safer on Indian Railways. Tell us.
