| NEWSNOTES Vajpayee lends his weight to find job for Sudips men
Staff Reporter I t may sound ludicrous. But it is a fact that the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee has taken the initiative to provide jobs (Beldars) to five persons recommended by the former Trinamul Congress M.P. Mr. Sudip Bandopadhyay. The number of posts advertised is a meager 69 and the number of applicants is as high as 26,000. No written tests have been taken nor the applications have been sorted out. With letters written by the Prime Minster, and top brass of the Union Urban Development Department, senior CPWD officials in Calcutta do not know they will get over the imbroglio.Mr. Bandopadhyay in his letter to the Prime Minister gave details of the five applicants and requested him to take the initiative for issue of the call letters and thereafter ask the PMO to see to it that these five chosen persons were served the appointment letters too. Interestingly, Mr. Vajpayee giving the letter top priority did the needful. Mr. Bandopadhyay wrote to the PM on June 10. Mr. Vajpayee signed the reply on 14 June. A copy of the PMs letter was forwarded to the Secretary Union Ministry of Urban Development around the same time with request to give top priority to it. On behalf of the Superintending Engineer of the CPWD Calcutta Central Circle, which falls under the Union Development and Employment Ministry an advertisement was inserted in the Hindi daily Sanmarg, dated 4 March calling for applications for 69 posts of Beldars. These are all class IV posts. Altogether 26,000 unemployed youths, many even from outside West Bengal, applied for the posts. Even thought sorting of applications is yet to be completed and dates for tests is yet to be notified nothing deters the Trinamul Congress leader, Mr. Bandopadhyay from cornering the Prime Ministers attention. Not only did Mr. Bandopadhyay write to Mr. Vajpayee, he ever personally met Mr. Ram Jetmalani, the concerned Union Urban Development Minister to ensure appointment of his chosen five candidates. Mr. Bandopadhyay even let it be known to the Prime Minister and informed Mr. Vajpayee that Mr. Jethmalani was sympathetic to his request. Why did he then write to the PM? Obviously, Mr. Jethmalani was shifted from the Urban Development Ministry and Mr. Jagmohan took over, so Mr. Bandopadhyay thought it safe to bring the matter to the notice of the PM. Mr. Bandopadhyay used his MP letterhead for writing his letter dated 10th June to the Prime Minister. At the end of the letter he himself described himself as a spokesman of the Trinamul Congress, Mr. Bandopadhyay in his letter to the Prime Minister identified the five persons as (1) Nemai Das S/O Abhimanyu Das (2) Dulal Roy S/O Dhirendra Nath Roy (3) Subhasis Dutta S/O Tarak Nath Dutta (4) Mrinal Kanti Mukherjee S/O Manoj Kumar Mukherjee (5) Subhendu Karmakar S/O Late Kartick Karmakar. In an attempt to deprive 25,995 candidates, Mr. Sudip Bandopadhyay recommended the cases of only 5 candidates throwing all canons of morality to the winds. What was the role of the Prime Ministers office? Within four days from the receipt of the letter, the Prime Minister replied to it acknowledging its receipt and a copy of the PMs letter was sent to the Secretary of the Urban Development Ministry almost simultaneously obviously for taking appropriate action in the matter. The matter did not end here. On 23 July the Director General of the CPWD, New Delhi, quoting VIP reference got a letter written by section officer D.P. Singh . the letter was addressed to CPWD Chief Engineer Eastern Zone, in Nizam Palace Calcutta. The Eastern Zone CPWD Chief Engineer was asked to submit a report to Delhi on the recommendations made by Mr. Sudip Bandopadhyay in his letter to the Prime Minsiter dated 10 June. The Chief Engineer, in Calcutta was asked to accord top priority to the matter. It is now crystal-clear that the Prime Minister does not find anything immoral in lending his weight to find employment for five people recommended by an erstwhile Trinamul Congress MP if need be, on a top priority basis. |
