NEWSNOTES
Jobs for the Trinamul
It may sound ludicrous. But to keep his ally happy, Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee has taken the initiative to provide jobs (Beldars) to five persons recommended by the former Trinamul Congress M.P. Mr. Sudip Bandopadhyay. The number of posts advertised is a meager 69 and the number of applicants is as high as 26,000. No written tests have been taken nor the applications have been sorted out and yet Vajpayee thought it prudent to take up the matter...Evidently it is election time..

THOUGHTS
The Myth of Hindutva
lbball1.gif (110 bytes)Literally Hindutva means a Hindu way of life or the essence of Hinduism. But it acquired a particular meaning in Indian politics when the BJP and other Hindu fundamentalist outfits started using it as an ideological jargon to propound the theory of Hindu State. In its current usage the term Hindutva is used to denote the supremacy of Hindu culture in India. Used in an exclusionist sense, the notion of Hindutva is employed to equate Indian culture with Hindu culture.

Talking Point

The BJP has blatantly flouted the model code of conduct of the Election Commission ; Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee addressed two public rallies in Haryana where the daises were adorned with cutouts of the three defence chiefs. The Prime Minister has since tried to make light of the issue by saying that this was the result of an oversight and overeaching enthusiasm after the war. Rightthinking people think otherwise.
