INDIA SHALL BE BUILT BY INDIANS

The National Democratic Alliance led by BJP along with its manifesto for the coming election has listed their achievements during 13 + 4 months rule. The achievements proudly proclaim:

  • Projects for electricity generation, transmission and distribution, construction and maintenance of roads, highways, vehicular tunnels and vehicular bridges, ports and harbours have been permitted foreign equity participation up to 100% under automatic route.
  • De-licensing 940 items by moving them from restricted list to OGL.
  • Opening of Insurance and Pension Funds to private companies with foreign equity participation.
  • Policy decision to reduce Government shareholding in non-strategic public sector units to 26%.
  • Proposal initiated to de-license petroleum products along with coal and lignite.
  • Finalisation of Power Project Agreement with Pakistan.
  • The Standing Committee on Energy in its report to the Parliament in April '99 had noted "The Committee are surprised to note the action of the Government in continuously reducing the Import Duty not only on the coking coal but also on non-coking coal. The Committee deplored the action of the Government that along with the domestic coal are saddled with burgeoning stocks, yet the Government had given preferential treatment to import coal by giving such concession."
  • By the end of Ninth Plan, 70% of India's crude oil have to be imported. Indigenous Steel industry has already become a victim because of dumping.
  • The Caretaker Government has recently announced waiver of Import Duty on import of power plant machinery for seven private mega power projects notwithstanding the presence of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., a giant public sector power plant equipment manufacturer.

So on and so forth……..

In spite of all these, the same alliance goes before the people with their commitment to the slogan "India shall be built by Indians." A novel Swadeshi way of building India by Indians!

30th August, 1999.
