From India News Network (INN)

The CPI(M) has said that the BJP and some interested quarters in the media are criticising the Election Commission for allegedly prohibiting the Kargil issue to be raised in the election campaign.

In a statement, the Politburo of the CPI(M) said that Prime Minister Vajpayee had asserted that no one can prevent the Kargil issue being discussed during the elections and that the BJP was deliberately distorting the directive given by the Election Commission on August 19. The Commission has, in fact, stated that Kargil will be a major issue in the political campaign. But what it has called for is not to use the defence forces in a partisan manner in this issue.

The BJP is guilty of dragging in the armed forces for their partisan electoral purposes. It is this impropriety which the opposition parties have objected to as a violation of the Commission's directive.
