Special Report

Asked why the import of 0.65 million ton sugar from Pakistan was allowed at the height of Kargil conflict, the Prime Minister Vajpayee’s cryptic reply to the newsmen at Hyderabad was "Trade relations between India and other countries are not interrupted by such conflict. Sugar is on the OGL list and private parties are free to import at prices decided by them."

What was the price - roughly Rs. 9000 million. Who were the beneficiaries - reportedly the sugar mills owned by Nawaz Sharif and his family as well as ISI’s Army Welfare Trust in Pakistan. The import was going on even when the country was having sugar stock of more than nine months.

But that’s not all. Power is not on OGL list. The BJP led NDA’s agenda lists "finalisation of power project agreements with Pakistan" as one of the achievements during their 13 - month rule. Ostensibly this achievement was for importing power from Pakistan. The power projects financed by World Bank in Pakistan need some market outside in absence of sufficient demand inside. As the World Bank wants, India has to comply. The Prime Minister obviously does not find any wrong in trading sugar and power inspite of the conflict.

But then why such a hue and cry was made about cricket between the two Countries? Don’t ask for logic. It is the RSS – BJP perception of patriotism that takes care of the interests of the traders / owner / industrialist / World Bank, while fanning jingoism among the people of India.
