| NEWSNOTES UP could be BJP's graveyard
Ranjan Sengupta T he BJP is being riaen by casteism within its rank in Uttar Pradesh. The fight between Chief Minister Kalyan Singh on the one hand and Rajnath Singh and Kalraj Misra on the other is havnting the Delhi leadership. Matter have reached such a pass that the two sides are not even on talking terms in fact, only face-saving 'namaskars' are being exchanged at election rallies where the leaders of the two factions face each other. The struggle is essentially one of castes with the Brahmins taking unbrage to the fact that a "low caste" Chief Minister is being allowed to continue fro solong.Even two years back, the factionalism was not so acute. But the elevation of Rajnath Singh as president of the UP unit of the BJP in place of Kalraj Misra and his insistence that Kalyan Singh be remoned has created inforesee crises. His enemies allege that UP under Kalyan Singh is going down in every sphese; riots and atrocites against women are increasing. His treatment of coalition partress as well as the Super-CM status of an ordinary women, Kusum Rai, have been opposed by the Singh-Misra faction. It may be recalled that 50 MCAS had demanded Kalyan's resignation in April and even petitioned the party high command 16 this effect. However, Kalyan Singh got a repreiene at that time because of Jayalaitha who created a crisis for the central leadership for whom national issues were more critical than State-level equations. But this repriene could be shortlined. The Singh-Misra faction has the full backing of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. At an election meeting in Lucknow, the PM's own constitency, the Chief Minister was not allowed to speah alongwith Mr. Vajpayee in Lucknow, is a known Kalyan-Baiter. The faction-ridden Uttar Pradesh unit is thus becoming a source of great irritation for the national leadership of the BJP. Meanwhile, Ms. Sonia Gandhi filed here nomination paper from Amethi to a response which could assume her of a certain victory. Sonia has projected Amethi as her "Second home," obviously referring to the fact that her husband Rajiv Gandhi, had won from this seat before he was killed. She has also tried hard to project here "home grown" image and constantly harped on the fact that she is no outsider to the region. |
